JACKSONVILLE, FL— Celebrate birds at Jacksonville’s national park, Timucuan Preserve! It provides thousands of acres of stopover habitat for birds (and butterflies) as they migrate through the area. During spring migration, birds from around the world make Timucuan Preserve their temporary home. The spring migration here in the park also lines up with National Park Week. To celebrate, Timucuan Preserve will host World Migratory Bird Day on April 27, 2024, with special arts and crafts, hikes, the Great Migration Obstacle Course, and spotting scope chats to help the community connect with the preserve and the birds that live here. Tag along with the Duval Audubon Society free bird hikes being offered at Fort Caroline National Memorial during the event. These hikes are great for beginners and experienced birders alike. Hikes will be approximately 1 hour. This birdtastic event will have a variety of stations where you can test your bird knowledge, build a bug hotel, compete against your family to build the best bird-based paper planes, or see if you can survive the Great Migration Obstacle course. These are just a few examples of the fun and educational opportunities offered.
The first 100 people to complete at least 4 activity stations will receive a free pair of binoculars.
In addition to the birding activities, we will have a Meet the Artist event taking place at the new WPA style park poster art exhibit by local artist Kathy Stark. Meet Kathy in the park visitor center and learn about the inspiration for her work, her methods, and her love of parks from 10:00 am-12:00 pm. All activities are free and open to the public. Please arrive at least 15 minutes early for all hikes. Closed-toed shoes are required. Refillable water container, sunscreen, are wide brim hat highly recommended.
